Interdisciplinary education for young researchers

The Urban Studies Institute develops education about the city from an interdisciplinary and integrated perspective. Notedly, USI organises two international and interdisciplinary summer schools.

Each year, the summer school CityLAB highlights a different theme within urban studies. Health, sustainability and the aesthetic imagination have featured in past editions. The target group consists of young researchers, graduates working in the wider professional field, and anyone concerned with the city.

Together with IMDO, USI organises the summer school The Sustainable City. This summer school investigates how cities can become sustainable through new technologies and adapted urban planning, without losing sight of the socio-economic implications and political context.

In 2024, there will be a mixed version of the two summer schools for the tenth edition of CityLAB.

All undergraduate students at the University of Antwerp can include the course 'Stad en diversiteit' (City and Diversity) in their study programme since 2019-2020. This course unit is taught by Stijn Oosterlynck and Bert De Munck. Students are confronted with (metropolitan) urban society and research about it in various (urban science) disciplines.
