Course content
This micro-credential consists of three modules.
Climate and Sustainability in Heritage covers diverse aspects of sustainability of (mainly tangible) heritage. The basics are anchored in international treaties and conventions which shall be discussed, as well as the international organisations that develop sustainable initiatives.
Built Heritage introduces and discusses different categories and values of built heritage (such as monuments, urban heritage, rural heritage, modern heritage and industrial heritage). It will focus on the relevant international policies and governing institutions. Historical evolution of conservation theories specific to different categories of landscapes and built heritage will be reviewed. It will focus on the global challenges affecting the built heritage (such as tourism, development pressures and climate change). Contemporary conservation approaches to landscapes and built heritage will be scrutinized with a critical approach.
Heritage: Landscapes is an introduction to the landscape approach and the landscape paradigm in relation to heritage studies on a global scale with a particular focus on the European and Flemish use. Within the course, you will learn to understand landscape as an integrating and holistic concept. Furthermore, the course will focus on how the change in the understanding of the landscape paradigm has been visible in both urban planning and landscape architecture and archaeology too.
