Why did you choose a bachelor’s in Biology?
Biology was always my favorite subject in secondary school. It was also instilled in me from an early age—my dad trained as a forest ranger, and as a child, I often visited the zoo or went on nature holidays. The University of Antwerp offered several specializations within the master’s program, which was a big advantage.
What does your job look like?
As a QA Associate in the lab, I’m responsible for monitoring quality and ensuring compliance with procedures. A large part of my work involves reviewing Master Batch Records—these are documents where all lab activities are meticulously recorded. I check whether everything was carried out correctly and whether the documentation meets the required standards.
I’m also responsible for releasing patient material that has been frozen in the lab. When material is imported from outside Europe, I ensure it is properly assessed and cleared for further processing in manufacturing. I provide the correct documentation to the lab operators so they can work safely and efficiently.
When non-conformities occur—deviations from standard procedures—I analyze them and help develop solutions and improvements. Another important aspect of my job is performing GDP checks (Good Documentation Practice), verifying that all documentation meets quality standards. I also update Standard Operating Procedures and work instructions to make lab work clearer and more pleasant for everyone.
How did you end up in this job after your studies?
I first worked for three months as a temp at Estée Lauder. I also subscribed to job newsletters from companies I was interested in, and that’s how I came across this position!
