Summer School on Vaccinology 2024
Vaccines are one of the most effective health interventions ever developed. Immunization is a safe and effective way to protect people against several diseases. The risks of these diseases are far greater than the risk of immunization. Immunization coverage remains a matter of concern as long as people are not protected against sometimes fatal complications of infectious diseases.
Good vaccination programmes and well-trained health professionals make a difference! However, vaccinology is a poorly addressed issue during training of future health care workers, leaving many without the necessary skills and knowledge on communication about vaccines and how to administer them. Because immunization is a responsibility of all health care workers, our program is of interest to all medical, nursing or midwifery students and postgraduates.
- The summer school will take place from 1 - 8 July 2024
- During 5 course days, lectures are organised on different vaccinology-related topics
- Language course: English
Location: University of Antwerp, Stadscampus, 2000 Antwerp
Partners: ESPID, WHO-Euro, EMSA-Antwerp, Rotary-Antwerp

Course description
The Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination (CEV) organises in 2024 the 15th edition of the Summer School on Vaccinology for students. This training course focuses on vaccines, infectious diseases, immunization programmes and many other aspects of immunization, such as communication and vaccine safety. The overall aim is to improve the current knowledge and skills related to vaccines for (para-)medical students, thus closing a gap in many curricula.
A maximum of fifty participants is allowed and the audience is balanced for gender and nationality. Experts in the field are coming from all over Europe to give lectures. There are ex cathedra sessions, but also hands-on workshops on the administration of vaccines, workshops on communication skills and a group task that is presented at the end of the course.
The social programme is organised with the help of an enthusiastic group of Antwerp medical students from EMSA (European Medical Students Association). They guide you around the bustling city of Antwerp and organise touristic and social activities.
Target group
The Summer School aims to offer an additional course to the current curricula of undergraduate and postgraduate students in (para)medical sciences. Priority for participation is offered to students of the WHO-European region.
Scholarships are available for undergraduate students from the WHO-European region. The scholarships cover the participation fee that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on course days, accommodation, local transport, course materials and part of the social & cultural programme.
ESPID-members benefit a reduction of the participation fee.
Participants will be admitted according to the date of registration and ensuring a balance in terms of regions and gender. Acceptance and payment methods will be notified by the Summer School secretariat and registration will be confirmed after we received your payment of the programme fee.
Campus
This summer school takes place at Stadscampus (Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerp) of the University of Antwerp. This campus is located in the city centre.
Micro-credential and study credits (ECTS)
Successful completion of the summer school can be awarded with 3 credits according the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
To include the credits in the curriculum at the home institution, participants need an agreement with the responsible person at the home institution.
A certificate will be awarded at the end of the programme. All certificates of completion are issued as a micro-credential.
