Constructing Meaning: Beyond words
Lecture Adele Goldberg

Words matter. The choice of one word over what seems to be a near-synonym can betray an attitude or change how an event is construed. Perhaps for this reason, it is easy to believe that all meaning comes from words, but certain multi-word patterns or “constructions” contribute to meaning as well. Subtle differences between the choice of constructions can also betray an attitude or change how we construe events. When misinformation is common, it is especially worth paying close attention to ours and others’ choices of words and constructions.
