What is ADHD?
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a developmental disorder that causes the brain to respond to stimuli faster. This causes hyperactivity and concentration disorders, among other things. Approximately 7% of children and young people suffer from it.
Alternative to ADHD medication
ADHD is treated with medication, but a quarter of children complain of side effects such as headaches, insomnia and loss of appetite. A Slovakian study now suggests that bark extract from the French maritime pine tree (Pycnogenol®) may be a viable alternative to regular ADHD medication. The NAtuRA research group (Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UAntwerp) is currently conducting research into the efficacy of tree bark extract in the treatment of ADHD.
What is the purpose of the research?
The results of this research are crucial for us to gain more scientific insight into ADHD and to evaluate the role of dietary supplements. The tree bark extract may even have an impact on the causes of the disorder, i.e. reduced immunity and oxidative stress. This means such dietary supplements may be an ideal alternative to ADHD medication.
