Who is ARGOS?
The ARGOS research laboratory focuses its ophthalmological research on the cornea, the transparent layer at the front of the eye. A healthy cornea is essential for good vision.
The researchers at ARGOS are therefore focusing on the development of new therapies to repair a damaged or diseased cornea and on the development of a new cornea research model.
The importance of a healthy cornea
The cornea, due to its transparent nature, is an imperceptible layer on the eye's surface. However, this property is its strength: a healthy cornea is transparent . Its structure consists of five distinct layers, allowing the cornea to play a crucial role in maintaining clear and focused vision. In addition, the cornea also acts as a protective layer against dust and particles that enter the eye from outside.
When the cornea can no longer perform its function, clouding occurs. This leads to poor vision and, in extreme cases, corneal blindness.
To date, there is only one clear treatment option: the transplantation of donor corneal cells. Unfortunately, the donor shortage means there are insufficient transplants available. Therefore, the search for alternative solutions is essential.
Who is ARGOS committed to?
ARGOS is committed to corneal patients in the fight against corneal blindness.
Corneal diseases and the extent to which they can impact quality of life are still relatively unknown to many. Therefore, ARGOS places great value on scientific and patient communication. Want to learn more about the research at ARGOS? Be sure to visit our website .
