To reflect on major societal issues and thus evolve towards a sustainable way of insuring: with this goal in mind, the University of Antwerp and Ageas are establishing the Chair in Sustainable Insurance.
Recent events such as the floods in Belgium and Europe and the coronavirus pandemic have further highlighted the crucial role of insurers in our society. Helping people in need. Providing support when things go wrong, thus ensuring the continuity of our daily lives... And even more challenges lie ahead: climate change, cybercrime, social inclusion and diversity in a polarizing society, caring for the elderly... Moreover, tomorrow is not today, and changes in the world are unpredictable and coming at us at an incredible speed.
Insurers can create impact in several ways: by pursuing an investment policy through the insurance products and related services they offer. Insurers have the tools to make a difference in terms of greater financial inclusion and solidarity, and by encouraging sustainable behavior. The Sustainable Insurance Chair, a collaboration between the University of Antwerp and Ageas, is being established to conduct research into sustainable insurance.
Hans De Cuyper, CEO of Ageas: “Social responsibility is in Ageas's DNA and is present in everything we do as an insurer. I am therefore particularly pleased with the establishment of the Sustainable Insurance Chair in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, chair holder Luc Van Liedekerke, and researcher Kristien Doumen. I am confident that this partnership between academia and the business community will allow us, as an insurer, to play a key role in solving the challenges facing society today and tomorrow.”
