The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science is looking for a full-time
doctoral scholarship holder in the field Analysis and/or Geometry
Position
PhD Research
- You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of analysis and/or geometry. Your research topic falls within one of the current research lines of the senior members of the Analysis Team (D. Eelbode, S. Hohloch, T. Mestdag), see here. A non-exhaustive list of topics includes, for example, symplectic geometry, (non-)integrable Hamiltonian systems, Floer homology, analysis and applications of Dirac operators, symmetries of differential equations, geometric mechanics, Finsler geometry, ….
- You will organise your own PhD research and report on your progress regularly.
- You will participate in the doctoral study programme at the Antwerp Doctoral School to support your PhD pathway.
- You will present the findings of your PhD research at academic conferences and you will publish them in scientific journals.
Education
- You will provide support with teaching and also teach high-quality academic classes yourself in Mathematics. Your teaching assignment may include basic mathematics courses as well as more specialized courses in your research domain.
- You will supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.
Services
- If eligible, you will apply in the first year of your appointment for a PhD Fellowship at the Science Foundation – Flanders (FWO).
- You will play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the Department of Mathematics. For example, you will assist in student recruitment and alumni activities and serve on boards and committees,...
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in Mathematics, Physics or Engineering Sciences, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- You did not yet obtain a PhD in Mathematics.
- You can demonstrate excellent study results.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
- You are motivated to work actively on your further professional development.
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You are willing to learn Dutch if you do not yet speak it.
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
- The planned start date is 1 December 2026 or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
- You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of courses and an educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
- You will do most of your work at Campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
