The Department of Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies in the Faculty of Applied Engineering is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of artificial intelligence for hydroclimate extremes.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis focusing on the analysis of extreme events using deep learning methods. Your responsibilities will include developing deep learning-based methods for modeling extreme events such as floods, droughts, and compound extreme events and exploring their drivers.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project and present results at international conferences and meetings.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for a maximum of 2 hours per week.
  • You will contribute to the Horizon Europe project SCEWERO and other relevant projects.
  • You will supervise bachelor and master students.

Profile

  • You hold (obtained no earlier than 1 March 2024), or will have obtained by the time you start work, a Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.
  • You have achieved a grade of at least distinction, cum laude, honors or onderscheiding for your Master's degree.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.
  • You are fluent in Python, machine learning, and deep-learning tools (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • You can speak and write fluently in English.
  • A background in hydroclimate extreme event analysis is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • Having published in high-ranking conferences and journals in the field is an advantage.
  • You are well-organized, have strong prioritization skills, consistently deliver on time, and are capable of autonomously planning and executing tasks.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of 1 year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another three years.
  • The planned start date is 1 January 2026 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
