The Department of Translational Neurosciences and the team of Dr. Jonathan Baets in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of inherited neuromuscular disorders.

Position

  • Join our motivated team to investigate how mutations in SPTAN1, a key cytoskeletal protein, cause a broad range of neurogenetic disorders. You will use iPSC-derived neurons to study cytoskeletal abnormalities through cutting-edge microscopy and image analysis, functional assays, and electrophysiology. You will perform transcriptomic profiling to reveal disrupted networks, and candidate genes which will be validated against large, unsolved NGS datasets. This project offers a unique opportunity to explore disease mechanisms at the interface of stem cell biology, neurogenetics, and functional genomics, contributing to both fundamental neuroscience and improved diagnostics in rare neurological diseases.
  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in Medical Sciences.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Translational Neurosciences.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Medicine, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences or equivalent or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the  University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are motivated, quality-oriented, conscientious, creative, able to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • You speak and write English fluently.
  • In addition to the grant as foreseen you are willing to apply and defend innovative projects at The Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and other relevant granting organizations.
  • Prior experience with cellular models including iPSC’s is recommendable (cell culture, cell transfection, cell characterisation using immunocytochemistry, and advanced imaging)
  • Nice to have’s: prior experience with bioinformatics/biostatistics and molecular genetics.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is November 1st, 2025.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
