The University of Antwerp’s Physics department is looking for a full-time expert in the field of electronic engineering.

Position

You will be a member of the Particle Physics research group at UAntwerp. In this role, you will contribute to the group’s two main research activities: the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and the Einstein Telescope programme, including the ETpathfinder R&D laboratory in Maastricht.

The position includes the following responsibilities:

  • you will analyse the technical needs of the research group and, in collaboration with the academic staff members of the group, define objectives and priorities to address them;
  • you will proactively lead the implementation of these objectives, within project budgets and deadlines;
  • you will design, develop and construct electronic and electromechanical systems for the measurement of physical processes;
  • you will manage practical constraints such as procurement procedures, component availability and delivery times;
  • you will keep up to date with developments in your area of expertise and, where necessary, follow training courses to acquire new skills;
  • you will assist staff members of the group in updating existing laboratory exercises and developing new ones for students;
  • you will maintain the research group’s computing infrastructure and provide technical support to staff members when needed.

Profile 

Your profile includes:

  • a Master of Science in Engineering degree;
  • strong planning and organisational skills and ability to work independently;
  • a communicative, service-oriented, reliable, creative, quality-conscious attitude;
  • ability to work in an international research environment and coordinate the work of a multidisciplinary project team;
  • proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C, C++;
  • experience with embedded electronic systems, including analogue and digital circuit design, hardware-software co-design, microcontroller- and microprocessor-based systems, PCB design, FPGA applications, data acquisition, and signal processing.
  • experience administering PCs running Windows and Linux operating systems;
  • willingness to travel to other work locations, including abroad, for periods of several days;
  • good written and spoken English skills;
  • a Class B driving licence.

What we offer

  • We offer a fixed-term appointment until 31 December 2029. 
  • The position includes:
    • a gross monthly salary within pay scale 7.1-9.1 of the pay scales of the Administrative and Technical Staff. Your entry-level grade (usually grade 7) depends on your relevant professional experience;
    • meal vouchers, ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, a group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting;
    • flexible working hours;
    • 40 days of annual leave and collective leave for 1 week when the university is closed, between Christmas and New Year;
    • a work place at the Groenenborger Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment;
