The University of Antwerp’s Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering is looking for 1 full-time (100%) research lab coordinator.
You will become part of the ELCAT research group, an internationally renowned team of more than 50 researchers. Our work is at the forefront of electrochemistry, focusing on the design of cutting-edge electrochemical reactors and catalysts. With a clear mission to electrify industry and replace traditional chemical processes with sustainable, green alternatives, we aim to drive the transition toward a cleaner future.
As a key member of our team, your responsibilities will include maintaining laboratory equipment, performing analyses, managing the inventory of chemical products and consumables, assisting researchers in experimental work and taking responsibility for maintaining a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
Position
The position includes the following tasks:
- You will support research group ELCAT (Applied Electrochemistry & Catalysis) in developing, analysing, implementing and evaluating policy.
- You will work on process innovation and optimisation for various national and international research projects, in close collaboration with the supervisor and researchers.
- You identify the tests and analyses required to achieve specific research objectives. You will be responsible for various physical and analytical tests to determine the end products used within the group. You define the approach and/or test programmes and process the results.
- You keep abreast of new developments in the field by attending trade fairs and specialised training courses.
- You actively seek out new methodologies, technologies, products and safety-related aspects, with a view to building your expertise.
- You will consult with others and keep your own professional knowledge up to date. You will be responsible for providing professional services within chemical engineering. You will provide expert advice and consulting within the field to other actors.
- You will coordinate the work of several assigned employees, in consultation with the manager(s). You will also support doctoral students with advice on analytical measurements and interpreting measured data.
- When achieving the objectives, you will take into account the instructions and regulations provided.
Profile
- You have a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, bio-engineering or equivalent competencies through experience.
- You have extensive knowledge of chemistry.
- You are familiar with analytical equipment (e.g. GC, HPLC, UV-VIS, ...).
- ICT knowledge is an asset and you are proficient in software packages such as MS Office, Matlab,…
- You take a leading role in supporting the research laboratories. You therefore have a broad understanding and vision of how to organise laboratories.
- You are hands-on and have good technical insight.
- You have good verbal and written English skills.
- You are communicative, customer-friendly, honest, creative, quality-oriented and collaborative.
- You are strong at planning and organising and can work independently.
What we offer
- We offer a temporary contract of 12 months, with the prospect of a permanent appointment following a positive evaluation.
- You will receive a gross monthly salary within pay band 7.1-9.1 of the pay scales of the Administrative and Technical Staff. Your entry-level grade (usually grade 7) depends on your relevant professional experience.
- You will receive meal vouchers, eco cheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, a group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- You will have 40 days of annual leave and collective leave for 1 week when the university is closed, between Christmas and New Year.
- You will do your work at Campus Drie Eiken (Wilrijk) in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
