Steps for mainstreaming floodable parks
AQUAlive focuses on the study of floodable parks using a holistic approach.
1. Firstly, the normative, strategic and urban development context will be analysed with the aim of identifying the regulatory opportunities and obstacles for implementing floodable parks in urban areas. This will include data collection of the local, regional and national water management strategies, NbS plans, sustainable development and biodiversity goals. Additionally, existing knowledge and experience will be gathered through semi-structured interviews with local experts with the aim to map and analyse the potential impacts of floodable parks on the quality of living including social and economic aspects. The analysis of this information will be compared among partners, adding value to the project.
2. At the same time, spatial analyses of the cities will be performed to identify and compare the risk zones where a floodable park would be most needed in each partner city. The combination of this information and the regulatory opportunities for NbS construction plans will allow both the selection of the case studies and the evaluation of potential locations where to construct other future floodable parks. The runoff mitigation potential and the potential water reuse will be analysed to understand the hydrological dynamics and circular embedment of this solution.
3. Once the case-studies are selected, the biodiversity and water quality as well as the local temperature mitigation provided by the park will be assessed and correlated. The gathered information about the ecological functioning of the parks will be translated into guidelines on the design and management strategies of floodable parks.
4. Lastly, stakeholders will be engaged throughout the project. After mapping the stakeholders, a stakeholders’ network will be performed. A co-design toolkit will be developed which will be applied during the co-design workshops with the mapped stakeholders. After the workshop, design scenarios of floodable parks will be created integrating the stakeholders’ perspectives.
