The Special Collections constantly monitors different acquisition opportunities (auctions, book sellers, antique shops, etc.) using our clearly defined and regularly consulted collection policies. Part of our function of being a heritage library is to acquire new copies that strategically add to our collection. Though, lesser known and equally important to the growth of our collection is what we call ‘collection builder’. In certain cases, the Special Collections will accept ownership of entire collections. For example, when a professor has collected a relevant personal library, or when bibliophiles or institutions want to grant access to a collection that is relevant to our collection policies, the Special Collections will accept these collections into our depository. Many remarkable collections have entered our ownership over the years.
Here is a representation of three of our most prominent collection builders.
