“Self-Destructive Stars and African Cosmology” explores the supernova phenomenon, focusing on the time disparity between a star’s explosion and our perception of it. This project uses cultural cosmology to bridge astrophysics with human traditions and religions, particularly through the lens of African cosmology. Media Archaeology engages with the concept of the time machine and in particular, we are interested in the magic lantern and the panorama. With our time machine, we re-interpret and subvert a technology originally developed by white males to captivate European audiences and later impress Africans, convincing them to abandon their own spiritual beliefs. This reinterpretation heals our relationship with technology, deconstructs the violence of white supremacy, and reclaims African knowledge.
Helena Eribenne will talk about her intended performance and the research she is carrying out at ARIA.
Katrien Kolenberg will elaborate on her research into stars, their sounds, and the field of cultural astronomy and cosmology.
