Spatial Development Plan 2060

Research context.

(1) The researcher is engaged as PhD-student at the university of Antwerp and as urban planner at the city of Antwerp. The design of the spatial development plan 2060 (RUP 2060) was an assignment by the city of Antwerp and selected as an “action research” in the PhD research. The researcher was also project leader of the design of RUP 2060.

(2) A spatial development plan describes in detail the possible spatial developments for a specific area and is legally regulating. The use of local knowledge during the design phase was a crucial factor for the quality and the public support of the final plan.

Meanwhile the results of this design process delivered crucial insights for the research: which knowledge is held by laymen? How and when can local knowledge be reached?

Impact.

The researcher formulated recommendation for a more integrated participation process of spatial development plans and master plans initiated by the city of Antwerp in the future.

The case gives insight of the added values of local knowledge for the design of urban plans. Other academic researchers used RUP 2060 as a reference (cf. Stijn Oosterlynck, Elise Schillebeeckx, ...)

RUP 2060 is operative since 2013 (30/07/2013). It is the legal basis for building permits in that specific neighbourhood.
