The AIMLife project tackles one of the biggest challenges in sustainable road construction: understanding how the composition of asphalt mixtures influences their service life. Extending the service life of pavements not only reduces costs but also minimizes environmental impact, addressing the construction industry’s significant consumption of raw materials and contribution to CO₂ emissions.
AIMLife builds on the FlexPAVE framework, an innovative tool that predicts pavement performance based on fundamental material behavior, physics-based and theory-informed models. The breakthrough of AIMLife lies in combining FlexPAVE with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI). By leveraging AI, the project can identify patterns and trends in simulation data with significantly reduced computational cost, enabling detailed investigations across multiple climate, traffic, and structural scenarios. This approach opens the door to more realistic, in-depth data-driven material analyses that were previously infeasible.
Why It Matters
Design better roads
Reduce environmental impact
Support informed decision-making
Improve quality control
This project involves two phases. In Phase 1, available asphalt mixture composition is supplemented with diverse pavement structure archetypes, traffic, and climate scenarios to enable the development of new physics-based AI service life predictive models. Once the models are developed, Phase 2 downscales back to the mixture level to understand how to optimize mixture composition under different scenarios.
