Psychotic depression in older adults (60+) as prodrome/risk factor for cognitive deterioration/dementia. 01/09/2018 - 30/08/2019

Abstract

Psychotic depression in older adults is a severe and debilitating disorder. Up to half of older adults presenting with depressive symptoms also experience psychotic symptoms. Mostly, psychotic symptoms include delusions on financial, somatic or nihilistic themes. Particularly in late life, the depressive symptoms in psychotic depression are more severe than in non-psychotic depression, which is also the case when compared to psychotic depression in younger adults. Moreover, (depressed) older adults exhibit problems in different cognitive domains such as executive functioning, attention and memory. In younger depressed patients, cognitive problems ameliorate when they reach remission, but in older patients remission of depression often doesn't mean resolution of their cognitive problems. Although earlier research, inconsistently, showed that latelife depression may be a prodrome or risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, little is known about the relation between late-life psychotic depression and incident cognitive decline. In this study, patients with a psychotic depressive episode at baseline are being monitored regarding their cognitive functioning at regular intervals during a period of 18 months, and compared to a control group of older adults with non-psychotic major depression. Both global and specific cognitive functioning (executive function, (working) memory, and attention) is being assessed.

Subtypes in the Borderline Personality Disorder, their validation and treatment trajectory. 01/09/2016 - 31/08/2018

Abstract

Despite the possibility to diagnose the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), defined as a persistent pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image and emotions, and strong impulsiveness, still considerable heterogeneity is observed in the BPD population, which makes diagnosis and treatment of these patients difficult. The classification of BPD into subtypes on the basis of temperament and emotion regulation has theoretical and clinical implications. For example, based on the temperament profiles of BPD patients, one can develop person-specific treatment. Therefore, the first aim of this project is to investigate whether we can define subtypes of BPD patients based on temperamental features and to investigate whether these subtypes differ with respect to psychopathology and coping (e.g., psychiatric symptoms, emotion regulation). The second aim of the present project is to investigate whether the different BPD subtypes will react differently on the treatment they will undergo. During the last two years, we have collected data of 150 patients with BPD in two psychiatric units specialized in the treatment of BPD based on the Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. The participants were assessed by both, direct (interview and questionnaires) and indirect measures (performance-based tasks) of temperamental features, coping styles (e.g. dissociation) and psychopathology (e.g., non-suicidal self-injury, depression, alexithymia) and are followed during treatment.

Abstract

The research project aims at investigating underlying psychological and behavioral mechanisms of severe major depressive disorder. Therefore two lines of research were set up. In the first part, the personality structure of patients was assessed extensively by means of rating scales and questionnaires. In the second part, neuropsychological assessment techniques were applied to investigate psychomotor functioning in geriatric patients with MDD.

Social behavior in schizophrenia: a neurocognitive approach. 01/01/2011 - 31/12/2014

Abstract

Since the recognition of 'Social Cognition' as an important impairment in schizophrenic patients more research has been performed within this domain. Most experiments in this domain worked with passive tasks that hardly approached realistic social situations. Against this are a lot more 'active' studies of social cognition in healthy volunteers. Now it appears that brain areas of healthy people which are involved in social cognition have much overlap with the disrupted brain regions of schizophrenic patients in other tasks than social cognition. Therefore this research want to break with the shortcomings of current research within the domain of social cognition (1) by using paradigms that focus on actual behavior in social contexts, (2) by creating real social interactive situations in which tasks are shared among participants, (3) and by means of EEG and fMRI methodology.

psychomotor symptoms in depression. 01/10/2008 - 30/09/2009

Abstract

The first part of this project aims to investigate the relationship between functional outcome and psychomotor retardation in a large group of depressed patients. In addition, the relationship will be explored between fine and gross motor activity, two important domains in the cluster of psychomotor symptoms. The second part of this project will concentrate on the brain activity accompanying the disturbances of action. Applying EEG and functional imaging techniques, activity in the (merely prefrontal) brain structures will be investigated in the different subtypes of depression (severe depressed with and without retardation and dysthymia). It is expected that the pattern of brain activity in depressed patients without disturbances of action substantially will differ from the pattern of those depressed patients with manifest psychomotor retardation.

Abstract

The aim of this project is to perform molecular genetics research to improve our knowledge about the etiology of schizophrenia (SZ) in general and of cognitive functioning in these patient in particular. The main goal is to establish a biobank with biological material (DNA, cellines, plasma) combined with detailed fenotypic data of unrelated SZ patients. Also we will collect large multigenerational families for linkage studies. DNA from this biobank will be used for molecular genetics/genomics analyses.

Effectiveness of inpatient treatment programs for dually diagnosed patients. 01/11/2004 - 31/10/2006

    Abstract

The investigation is preformed to support the `beleidsnota voor geestelijke gezondheidszorg' (Aelvoet & Vandenbroucke, 2001) and the `beleidsnota van de federale regering in verband met de drugsproblematiek' (2001). In the first one is stated that there is a need for specific attention to the crisis intervention and the treatment of dually diagnosed patients. In the second one is stated that the experiments with dually diagnosed patients have to be supported and evaluated. The dually diagnosed patients as well as the people who work with them are tested. The first part of the investigation focuses on the group of dually diagnosed patients. Dually diagnosed patients are patients with coexisting severe psychotic and substance use disorders. There are two questions that can be formulated: 1.Are double diagnosed patients effectively treated when they follow an residential integrated treatment program? 2.Is there a difference in efficiency between the residential integrated treatment and the residential non-integrated treatment program?

    Abstract

Prominent researchers argue that there is a clear relationship between the concept of impulsivity and substance use disorders. Since this personality trait covers a wide range of behaviors such as novelty seeking, behavioral undercontrol and disinhibition, it is important to investigate whether each component is equally important. The present research team investigates the role of the disinhibition component in abstinent alcoholics by means of questionnaires, go no go tasks and gambling tasks.

Feasibility study on the evaluation of treatment services for patients with dual disorders/diagnosis. 01/07/2002 - 30/09/2003

    Abstract

This study is a preliminary study for an overall evaluation study on treatment services for patients with dual disorders/diagnosis. Based on the existing scientific literature (guidelines, standards, protocols and study reviews) and our own experiences in national and international treatment programs, we will give an advice about the feasibility of an evaluation research in Belgium. After a thorough consideration of these research findings, we will then propose a research protocol. The evaluation research explores the effectiveness of different treatment programs for people with concurrent severe mental illness, in this case psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders. This means that we will extensively compare the standard care with the more intensive inpatient treatment programs, the so-called pilot treatment programs . Given their integrated treatment care and continuous care, we expect the pilot treatment programs to be superior to the standard care. This feasibility research comprises the following objectives: 1.A research on the feasibility of the evaluation research. A thorough investigation of official treatment guidelines and results of study reviews precedes our advice about the meaningful and practical feasibility of an evaluation research in Belgium. 2.Development of a research protocol. ·Conceptualisation of our target and control groups. ·Choice of independent and dependent variables. Each variable has to be described on the following levels: ·The individual patient. ·The socio-familial network. ·Social services. ·The treatment staff. ·Development of a specific methodology, for instance the definition of suitable instruments to measure the above mentioned variables. ·Proposition of a research procedure.
