Expertise

Ellen is a member of the Cooperating Antwerp Psychiatric Research Institute. As coordinator of the postgraduate program in Integrative Psychotherapy, her research interests are also in that area. Her expertise lies mainly in the areas of trauma, attachment problems and forensic psychiatry. She is particularly interested in mixed method designs, research with single-case studies and research comparing different approaches (mainly person-centered/experiential/emotion-focusd and cognitive behavioral) to investigate which approach works best for which client. Personalized treatment interventions and transdiagnostic processes are central here. One of her current studies focuses on a comparison between Imagninary Exposure and Imanginary rescripting in PTSD patients due to multiple and repeated interpersonal abuse in childhood. Another study compares Mindfulness and Focusing training in college students with stress symptoms. The postgraduate training also collaborates in a study (SPRISTAD) of development in psychotherapy trainees. This study aims (1) to track progressive changes over time in trainees, and (2) to identify influences that facilitate or impede trainee development.
