Erik Giltay is a psychiatrist and epidemiologist who studied Medicine at the Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre qualifying in 1995. He received his PhD-degree cum laude in 1999. Since 2007 he works as a psychiatrist at the department of psychiatry at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in Leiden. This department seeks to address the comprehensive needs of patients with mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. Giltay and his colleagues developed the use of Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM), to be implemented in clinical care and epidemiological research. He published studies on depression epidemiology, dispositional optimism, aggression, and metabolic, endocrine and dietary risk factors (with a special focus on n-3 fatty acids). He has co-authored more than 200 scientific articles (which included a second authorship for a N Engl J Med publication in 2010). Dr. Giltay works as a staff psychiatrist for the inpatient psychiatric unit in the university hospital and as a guest-professor at the University Antwerpen. He supervises psychiatry residents and a team of PhD students, and teaches medical Master students.
