About Jeroen Famaey

Jeroen Famaey is assistant professor (TTZAPBOF) at the IDLab research group, an inter-university research group part of the University of Antwerp's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and Ghent University's Department of Information Technology. Additionally, he is affiliated with imec as a senior researcher. He received his M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Ghent University in 2007 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science Engineering, on federated management of multimedia streaming services, from the same university in 2012.

Research interests

My general research interests encompass design of algorithms and protocols for wireless communications and networking, focusing mainly on the MAC and network layer. Concretely, my main topics of interest include:

  • MAC-layer protocol and algorithm design for IEEE802.11ah
  • Deterministic and ultra-low-power wireless networks (focusing mainly on IEEE 802.15.4e TSCH)
  • Co-existence of heterogeneous wireless networks, hybrid MAC protocols and interference avoidance

In a previous life, I performed research on management of (multimedia and virtual) networks, focusing on the following topics:

  • Multimedia service delivery: HTTP Adaptive Streaming, Content Delivery Networks, video caching
  • Autonomic network management: Applied machine learning and semantics, monitoring, service discovery and matchmaking
