Jolien is a scientific researcher (FWO) at the University of Antwerp, Department of Sociology, where she is a member of the Centre for Population, Family and Health. During her Ph.D. research, she translates her knowledge of medicalization theory and gender stratification studies into a study on the medicalization of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Kenya. This project aims to develop a better understanding of the trends in the medicalization of FGM/C in Kenya providing a dual perspective on both the demand and supply side, by conducting quantitative and qualitative research.
