The construction of a comparativ database of typographical features of the handpress book produced between c. 1470 and c. 1815 in neighbouring regions of Flanders 01/01/2010 - 31/12/2011

Abstract

This project adds an extra dimension to the postdoctoral research "The typography of the handpress book in Flanders (1473-c. 1815). Genres, evolutions and factors" by extending the geographical selection criterium. An instrument for comparison and review will be built by means of registration of typographical features of c. 250-300 carefully selected handpress books that were produced between 1470 and c. 1815 in neighboring regions of Flanders.

The typography of the handpress book in Flanders (1473-c. 1815). Genres, evolutions and factors. 01/10/2009 - 31/05/2012

Abstract

The present research proposal will shed more light on the typographical evolutions of the handpress book in Flanders and will go into the underlying reasons for these phenomena. In order to attain this end, the typography of a limited number of well chosen genres will be analysed. The leading hypothesis is that typographical evolutions develop differently, faster or slower, depending on the characteristics of the distinguished genres. This starting point is tentatively confirmed by case studies (e.g. Van Impe & Bos 2006).
