Antwerp Allergen Analysis (AAA) – Decoding Dermocosmetics causing Allergic Contact Dermatitis in Atopic Dermatitis Patients. 01/08/2026 - 31/07/2030

Abstract

Many people with eczema (atopic dermatitis) also suffer from allergic reactions to ingredients in skincare products (dermocosmetics). These reactions, known as contact dermatitis, can cause redness, itching, and discomfort. However, diagnosing the exact cause is challenging because some allergens remain hidden in dermocosmetic products, and standard allergy tests may not detect them. Our research focuses on identifying these hidden allergens, especially certain chemicals such as acrylates and preservatives, that may trigger contact dermatitis, particularly in people already suffering from eczema. We will analyze a wide range of skincare products to check for these substances and study how they affect people with and without eczema. Additionally, we will explore whether a simple, non-invasive skin test (Natural Moisturizing Factor or NMF scan) can help predict who is most at risk. By improving allergy testing and uncovering hidden allergens, our study aims to help dermatologists make better diagnoses and guide people toward safer skincare choices. In the long run, this research could also inform policymakers to improve cosmetic labeling and regulation, ensuring safer products for everyone (consumers and patients).
