Wout Saelens (°1993) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Urban History of the University of Antwerp and the HOST research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He studied medieval history at the University of Ghent (2015) and obtained in 2021 his PhD at the UA and VUB with a dissertation on domestic energy consumption in early modern Ghent and Leiden. He is currently working on the social and political conflicts behind the transition to coal and the problems of smoke pollution in the industrial city of the nineteenth century.
