Visit to the Palace of Justice

17 September 2025

On Wednesday 17 September 2025, the new Master of Laws and exchange students visited the Palace of Justice in Antwerp.

Magistrate Pierre Thiriar guided the group on an engaging tour. With expertise and a touch of humour, he introduced them to the Belgian legal system, the different courts and their jurisdictions, the significance of the judicial robe, and the building’s distinctive architecture, while also sharing historical insights. To conclude the tour, he invited the students to observe several hearings and offered further explanation afterwards.

The visit continued with an inspiring expert talk by Sanne Raats, a public prosecutor specialising in drug offences. She gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at her daily work, explaining how she stays involved in a case from start to finish, and offering valuable insight into the challenges and successes of tackling Antwerp’s drug scene. The Belgian detention system was also discussed in depth.

The visit provided students with an inspiring introduction to the reality of justice in Belgium – a solid start to their academic journey in Antwerp.
