Dr Kristof Loockx is a Senior Postdoc of the FWO. His research focuses on the impact of urbanisation, port expansion and mobility on maritime communities in the 19th and 20th centuries, with emphasis on Antwerp and Boston. He currently studies how maritime households coped with the absence of family members during the transition from sail to steam, in collaboration with the Centre for Port Cities and Maritime Cultures (University of Portsmouth). He is a Fulbright alumnus, Research Director at the Posthumus Institute and coordinator of the Maritime Labour History Working Group (ELHN).
