Doing a PhD

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences attaches great importance to doctoral research. On average, there are 175 doctoral students working in the faculty's labs and research units at any one time. About 25 of these students defend their theses every year.

Are you considering doing a PhD? Then find out more about it here.

What does a PhD programme looks like?

Your doctoral research is overseen by a supervisor. In addition, PhD students are also entitled to follow additional courses at the Antwerp Doctoral School. You complete your PhD by defending your thesis.

Doctoral research
After finding a supervisor and securing funding for your PhD, you will start to carry out your doctoral research in one of the faculty's research units.

Doctoral programmes
The doctoral programme at the University of Antwerp is rather open in nature, meaning that you don't have to follow a strict study programme. Instead, with your supervisor, you choose a series of suitable courses and activities both at and outside of the University of Antwerp. Doctoral students are encouraged to participate in interuniversity and international programmes.

Defending a PhD
The final element of your PhD is the public defence of your thesis. Every year, about 25 PhD students defend their theses in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences. These are public events which are open to everyone. You can find an overview of recent doctoral defences on the website.
