Organization description

National Project Coordinator. Team of researchers working on urban and ecology fields regarding climate adaptation, biodiversity and water regulation. Expertise on biodiversity (most taxa), ecological indicators, remote sensing and satellite-based measures, microclimate, statistical analysis, modelling and citizen engagement amongst others. In charge  of the analysis of microclimate data of the case studies and will provide input on geospatial data as well as analyses biodiversity and hydrological data.

FCiências.ID is a highly experienced Non-Profit Private Association, initiative of a Higher Education institution CIÊNCIAS and 6 private companies, supporting and potentiating their Research and Development activities. It legally represents 12 CIÊNCIAS’s research centres, on all fields of science. CIÊNCIAS hosts and provides the scientific framework to research activities. CE3C is an Excellent Research Centre that develops fundamental and applied research in ecology, evolution, environmental science, and related societal issues, and is part of the Associate Laboratory CHANGE.

FCiencias will perform fundamental research. It will provide the needed data for WP1 and WP2; it will also be strongly involved in WP3 regarding biodiversity; will organize stakeholder workshops for WP5 and participate in the AQUAlive KH Council. FCiencias will lead WP4, focusing on climate regulation provided by floodable parks, and its relation to biodiversity and provision of ESS. Its team has a large experience working with microclimate regulation provided by urban green infrastructure. This includes quantification and modelling data from microclimate sensors and from earth observation . The team also used earth observation to characterize vegetation , and is experienced on measuring the effects of microclimate on multiple aspects of biodiversity and its relation to the provision of ecosystem services .

Principal Investigator

Dr. Pedro Pinho currently an Assistant Research at cE3c Sciences Faculty, University of Lisbon, leading the UrbanLab at cE3c. His research topics are on the effect of environmental changes on ecosystems functioning and provision of services, considering changes with both natural and human origin: urbanization, desertification and land degradation, climate alterations, eutrophication and land-use/cover. He is currently focused on ecology topics, including biodiversity, ecosystem services and nature-based solutions. His work tools include ecological indicators, remote sensing and spatial analysis, modelling and citizen engagement.

Team Members

Alexandra Oliveira is a junior researcher at FCiencias and is experienced in using earth observation to characterize the environment, including acquiring and processing satellite and drone data. FCiencias will subcontract sampling and identification of vegetation biodiversity, which is the more economic way to obtain the relevant data, because it will be done in less than 4 months, while also supporting some of the partners on doing so. Biodiversity data will be analysed by the project team.
