LEMPI: Nonverbal expression to strengthen relatedness experience - connecting intimate partners in remote physical locations

Design inclusive research realized in Ivo Dewit's PhD research.  A focus on user experience: Nonverbal stories of memorable locations in long-distance relationships - LEMPI.

Research questions.

  • How rich is nonverbal communication (NVC) for people to emotionally express themselves?
  • How can computermediated communication (CMC) support longdistance relationships (LDR)?
  • Which attributes do NVC-products need to have to evoke an enriched experience of relatedness for LDRs?

Impact.

  • International Conference on Design & Emotion: 27-30 Sept, 2016 (Amsterdam)
  • The principles of (user) experience values in the design of product-service systems in 3rd Ba (course: User Experience) and 1st Ma (IPO).
  • The research gave input to the attributes of new upcoming interactive (IoT) for meaningful nonverbal communication.
  • High end, functioning model in wood, 3D printed components and electronics.
  • Five couples in long-distance relationships have tested the prototype for 2 weeks and reported in a diary / cultural probe and were interviewed after.
  • NOKIA provided 10 smartphones to connect the device, application to synchronize orchestrate the use of LEMPI.
  • Presented at the International Conference on Design & Emotion, Jonathan Chapman's session: 'EXPERIENCE OF TIME'
  • Issue 'Celebration & Contemplation' conference proceedings.
