Goía is a reusable packaging system for the online grocery market, more specifically for strawberry and mushroom orders. Goía eliminates disposable packaging and reduces food waste. The packaging consists of three parts and guarantees optimum storage and protection of the fruits. The use of the packaging is supported by a circular logistics chain, which starts with the strawberry and mushroom growers and then passes through various stakeholders. The retailer owns the packaging, and the consumer can use it with the help of a deposit system.

How does the packaging work?

The Goía packaging ensures an extended shelf life of the contents. For example, the universal sleeve provides an extra protective layer during transport and maintains an optimal climate. The relative humidity in the sleeve can be regulated by means of a slider that determines the size of the vent. The basket differs per variety and is adjusted to the specific needs of the fruits. For example, two pins limit the relative movements of the strawberries. This reduces the risk of damage, which benefits the shelf life. The mushroom basket has large meshes that ensure a smaller contact surface between the wall and the mushrooms, which prevents accelerated spoilage.

Operation of logistics chain

The packaging cycle starts with the grower, who places the strawberries and mushrooms directly in the baskets during the picking. After the sale, the strawberries and mushrooms are transported to dark stores, which are specifically designed to facilitate efficient order picking of online orders. Here, the baskets are packed in the sleeves, so that they are extra protected for the last mile phase. The online orders are then put together in delivery boxes, which contain two cooling elements. The consumer can choose to have his order delivered at home, or to pick it up at his local retailer. After consumption, he returns his used packaging, for which he receives a deposit. The used packaging is then returned to the dark store, where it is cleaned and disinfected. Finally, the baskets are transported to the growers, ready for a new use cycle.
