"Valuation of biodiversity: a multidisciplinary perspective"

The STRATEGO Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Antwerp is organising a PhD workshop on June 17th, 2026, titled “Valuation of biodiversity: a multidisciplinary perspective”. The workshop is co-organized by the INVABIO project.

The workshop will entail short presentations by PhD students on their ongoing work, with feedback on their presentations and discussion guided by our guest, prof. dr. Marije Schaafsma from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is specialised in analysing the well-being and welfare effects of ecosystem services changes, using monetary and non-monetary valuation methods, and has a keen interest in deliberative valuation and assessing environmental justice in/through valuation methods. Other senior experts from the STRATEGO and/or INVABIO consortia will also be present to contribute with their feedback.

Submissions are welcome on topics such as – but not limited to – monetary (e.g., cost-benefit analysis, market-based instruments) and non-monetary valuation (e.g., multi-criteria decision analysis, deliberative valuation, relational value assessments) of biodiversity, plural valuation of nature (instrumental, relational, and intrinsic values), methodologies for environmental impact assessment, biodiversity offsetting tools and metrics (e.g., No Net Loss frameworks), and valuation of ecosystem services.

Please subscribe by sending a draft title and abstract (max 250 words) of your presentation to: erik.matthysen@uantwerpen.be by June 1st.

As we aim to provide extended feedback on the current work of PhD students, this event will be limited to a max. of 8 participants. We look forward to having you in Antwerp!
