TINA: Technology, Innovation, News and Advertising

TINA is a group of researchers that study the impact of innovation in the news industry on readers, news organizations and advertisers.  Our members are part of the research groups MIOS and MPC. We are funded by the FWO and the University of Antwerp.

Opportunities and challenges for news media in the digital age

Due to digitalization, a decrease in offline subscriptions, and the exponential growth of platforms such as Facebook and Google, the dominant revenue model of many news companies is failing. Advertising revenue is declining, because advertisers are moving away with their ad dollars to other spaces online, and readers are increasingly making use of ad-blocking technology. On top of that, many readers currently do not pay for online news. To survive, news companies chase scale through consolidation and international expansion, but not every news company can achieve this. Despite these challenges, the digital era also provides news companies opportunities to innovate their news production, news distribution and business models. The question is: how do these changes impact publishers, readers, and advertisers?

A call for research on technology, innovation and commercial content in the news industry

It is of crucial importance to investigate the impact of these fast-paced developments in the news industry on publishers, advertisers and news readers. With our scientific research, we aim to support the financial and democratic wellbeing of Belgian news companies.

Our research is centered around three key themes

1. Innovation in online advertising

  • Native Advertising (sponsored content): can publishers implement this in an effective and sustainable manner? If so, how should they do this?
  • Affiliate Marketing: how to balance editorial independence and readers’ goals with commercial linking?

2. Audience analytics

  • What is the influence of audience analytics on digital journalism and audience engagement?

Talk to Kenza Lamot to learn more

3. Innovative business models for (online) news media

  • What are potential (new) business models for online news media? What is the impact on news production and dissemination?
  • Entrepreneurial journalism: how to innovate while combining commercial and editorial goals within a newsroom to ensure the financial and democratic wellbeing of the news company?
