UAntwerp charges a CO₂e contribution on business travel by air. Through the UAntwerp Climate Fund, these funds are reinvested in research, innovation and action that strengthen the university’s sustainability ambitions.
Once a year, a call for project proposals is launched, inviting all staff members, research groups, services and departments to submit project proposals.
Projects can be submitted within three categories:
- Scientific projects with local sustainability impact — research that translates academic expertise into concrete societal applications, ranging from the neighborhood level to the regional scale.
- UAntwerp as a living lab — research, investment, experimentation and awareness-raising aimed at creating a climate-neutral and climate-resilient university, through analyses, pilots, policy interventions, educational innovation and/or participatory processes.
- Projects with sustainability impact in the Global South — strengthening local partners and communities, preferably with a scientifically substantiated CO₂e reduction component.
First call
In April 2026, the first call for project proposals was launched. A total of 29 projects were submitted, with a total requested budget of nearly €1,000,000.
Seven projects were selected: two with a local sustainability impact, two focused on applications within the university, and three projects in the Global South.
Key information
- Budget per project: minimum €5,000; no fixed maximum. The annual budget available is approximately €100,000.
- Project duration: 1 to 3 years.
- Eligible costs: personnel and operating costs that are directly necessary for the project.
The UAntwerp Climate Fund offers all staff members the opportunity to explore impactful, interdisciplinary and experimental projects that contribute to a sustainable future for our university and society.
