Urban Green Infrastructure Beyond Borders

Een internationaal voorbereidingstraject voor een Summer School voor en door studenten, met partners uit vijf continenten en studenten en docenten van Universiteit Antwerpen.

Groene Infrastructuur in de stad (gevelgroen, dakgroen, infiltratievoorzieningen… ) werkt niet overal op dezelfde manier. Wat werkt in Antwerpen, werkt niet per se in Bogotá, Nairobi of Mumbai. Innovaties uit het Globale Zuiden kunnen waardevolle inzichten bieden voor het globale Noorden en vice versa.

Deze intensieve vijfdaagse workshop brengt studenten en onderzoekers van de Universiteit Antwerpen samen met internationale experten uit Brazilië, Colombia, Kenya, India en Italië. Samen werken ze aan de inhoudelijke en methodologische voorbereiding van een Summer School die in 2027 zal georganiseerd worden aan Universiteit Antwerpen.

Doelstellingen

• Curriculum ontwikkelen voor een internationale Summer School over groene infrastructuur vanuit meervoudige perspectieven - voor en door studenten.
• Gelijkwaardige partnerschappen smeden tussen Antwerpen en instellingen uit het Globale Zuiden, met respect voor lokale kennis en kennissystemen.
• Gezamenlijk onderzoek verkennen op het snijvlak van duurzame steden, biodiversiteit en klimaatadaptatie, ingebed in diverse stedelijke contexten.
• Toekomstige financiering voorbereiden via VLIRUOS, Erasmus+ en Horizon Europe, opgebouwd vanuit concrete partnerschapsafspraken.

Vervolg in Barcelona: WGIC26 Barcelona​

Deze workshop is de eerste fase van een tweeluik. In oktober 2026 komen de partners opnieuw samen tijdens het World Green Infrastructure Congress (WGIC26) in Barcelona, waar het curriculum, onderzoek en partnerschapsafspraken verder zullen worden uitgediept en geconsolideerd.

Frederik Vandyck en studenten van de opleidingen Architectuur, Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen en Industriële wetenschappen: bouwkunde.

Logistieke ondersteuning werd geboden door het Global Engagement Office, Carla Uwents (Environmental Office) en Matthias Verstraeten (IMDO).

An international preparatory program for a summer school organized by and for students, featuring partners from five continents and students and faculty from the University of Antwerp.

Green infrastructure in cities (vertical greening, green roofs, infiltration systems, etc.) does not function the same way everywhere. What works in Antwerp does not necessarily work in Bogotá, Nairobi, or Mumbai. Innovations from the Global South can offer valuable insights for the Global North, and vice versa.

This intensive five-day workshop brings together students and researchers from the University of Antwerp with international experts from Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, India, and Italy. Together, they will work on the content and methodological preparation for a Summer School to be held at the University of Antwerp in 2027.

Objectives

• Develop a curriculum for an international Summer School on green infrastructure from multiple perspectives—for and by students.
• Forge equal partnerships between Antwerp and institutions from the Global South, with respect for local knowledge and knowledge systems.
• Explore joint research at the intersection of sustainable cities, biodiversity, and climate adaptation, embedded in diverse urban contexts.
• Prepare future funding through VLIRUOS, Erasmus+, and Horizon Europe, based on concrete partnership agreements.

This workshop is the first phase of a two-part series. In October 2026, the partners will meet again at the World Green Infrastructure Congress (WGIC26) in Barcelona, where the curriculum, research, and partnership agreements will be further explored and consolidated.
