Winter School 2026

Birzeit University and the University of Antwerp's Law and Development Research Group are organizing a Winter School, International Order after Gaza: Failures, Emancipatory Possibilities & Decolonial Futures, from 4-12 February 2026. The Winter School program will include a welcome dinner, a visit to The Hague (International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court), a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels, and more.

Objectives & expected learning outcomes

  • Introduce a multidisciplinary framework that enables participants to gain an in-depth understanding of international human rights issues.
  • Enhance participants’ knowledge through an interdisciplinary approach to genocide as both a conceptual and legal framework.
  • Demonstrate the correlations between colonialism, settler colonialism, violations of human rights, and atrocity crimes.
  • Raise awareness of international, political, and economic challenges shaping the future of human rights and related instruments.
  • Build a dialogical, experience-informed space for critical reflection on international law and human rights.
  • Create a meeting place for students, researchers, and teachers from Palestine and Belgium.
  • Allow participants to form long-lasting academic and professional relationships.
  • Offer an innovative syllabus that can be reproduced and taught in Palestine, Belgium, and globally.

Target group

This Winter School is reserved for UAntwerp and Birzeit University students and researchers.

Study credits (ECTS)

Successful completion of both modules of the programme will award 3 credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Campus

This winter school will take place at Stadscampus (Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerp) of the University of Antwerp. This campus is located in the city centre.
