Role and expertise

I am an Associate Professor in Leadership in Health and Care with a multidisciplinary background in nursing, clinical psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy, and psychology (PhD, Ghent University). My professional experience spans both clinical and academic settings. Between 2007 and 2013, I worked part-time at Antwerp University Hospital (sleep centre and outpatient psychiatry) while also serving as a lecturer and Head of an Expertise Centre at Karel de Grote University of Applied Sciences and Arts.Since 2013, I have been affiliated with the Centre for Research and Innovation in Care. I currently chair the Education and Examination Committee of the Master of Nursing and Midwifery and lead the WORC research line. Alongside my academic role, I work as a keynote speaker, trainer, and facilitator for healthcare organisations.

Motivation

Healthcare offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of people who are often at their most vulnerable. Through my work in research, education, and service, I aim to strengthen both the nursing and midwifery professions and the organisations in which they operate.

Research focus

My research focuses on identifying the conditions that foster both structural and psychological empowerment among healthcare professionals, particularly nurses. By strengthening these elements, healthcare organisations can improve their ability to attract, engage, and retain staff.

Teaching contributions

I coordinate six courses, all centred on leadership and management in healthcare. Together with Filip Haegdorens, I am responsible for the specialisation track Leadership in Health and Care, where we prepare future professionals for leadership roles in complex care environments.

Services and collaboration

I design and facilitate leadership development programmes and support executive teams, departments, physician associations, and broader healthcare organisations in navigating complex organisational and leadership challenges. As a keynote speaker, I bring an engaging and evidence-based perspective on topics such as leadership, teamwork in healthcare, psychological safety, toxic work environments, stress management, resilience, and sleep.
