Stakeholder involvement in the longterm management of long-lived and high level radioactive waste and the CARL project.
Abstract
Subtask 1: Offering ONDRAF-NIRAS guidance and recommendations through the preparation and setting up of a stakeholder involvement apporach for the longterm management of long-lived and high level radioactive waste. The focus will be on the elobaration of proposals for making a participatory process of this kind tangible and to suggest ways of putting this into practice. This will be done in close collaboration with the parties concerned. Subtask 2: Research and coordination regarding the CARL project, an international and comparative social science research project into the effects of stakeholder involvement in decision-making in radwaste management. In a first phase this implies the elaboration of a Belgian country report, outlining the current state of affairs in this matter. In a second phase an in depth comparative study of a set of key questions ¿ still to be delineated ¿ across the participating countries (Belgium, Canada, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK) will also be carried out.Researcher(s)

Between the supermarket and the shopping center. The meaning of shopping in everyday life.
Abstract
Beginning in the 1980's, an increased interest from sociology in consumption and consumer culture emerged. Many authors consider material culture as the heart of contemporary society. The individual in this society is looked upon as an active consumer moving around on different markets where he examines, tests, imitates, combines or changes the available consumption signs. The consumer uses a bricolage strategy to construct his identity. Up to now, sociologists devoted little attention to the selection and purchase of goods. This postdoctoral project concentrates on shopping behavior: how do people shop and how does the purchase of goods relates to the personal construction of lifestyles and to consumer culture at large ? In other words: who buys what, where, when, with whom and for what purpose ? The aim of the project is to develop new insights in and theoretical perspectives on the consumer process.Researcher(s)

Border work for newcomers on the labor market. A test of Europe.
Abstract
Border workers in the north of Flanders and the south of the Netherlands take a particular position on both the Belgian and the Dutch labor market. These employees are confronted with special problems and challenges. Not only the legal framework (wages, insurances) are different. The crossing of the border brings along a much broader spectrum of cultural experiences (e.g. cultural activities, leisure and consumption). This situation is not only important for those employees who are actual border workers but also for graduate students who might enter the system of border work. This research tries to identify the way in which these young people regard borders and working abroad.Researcher(s)
