Hilde Greefs is full-time senior lecturer in social history at the University of Antwerp. For her research activities she is connected to the Centre for Urban History in the department of history. Her research focuses on social and economic history during the long nineteenth century (1750-1914), with a particular interest in social and economic networks, migration, maritime trade and business life in port cities. Her PhD-research on the business élite in Antwerp during the first half of the nineteenth century was rewarded with the price of the province of Antwerp in 2008. She was also funded by the University of Antwerp to conduct international research on maritime trade and international trade networks in London, Hamburg, Paris, New York and Philadelphia.
