Juliette Bour specializes in the contemporary political history of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and, more specifically, its perpetrators, especially women. Her work primarily relies on Rwandan judicial sources and field-based oral histories from a range of actors, including victims, witnesses, and perpetrators. The participation of women and minors in violence is often surrounded by stereotypes. To challenge these, this research highlights the specific processes of socialization and politicization that shaped their involvement before, during, and after the genocide. By moving beyond simplistic narratives of "transgression," this work contributes to a political history of Rwanda that contextualizes the conditions enabling civil society actors to engage in genocidal violence.
