Abstract

The goals of the research question are as follows: - intelligibly collecting and arranging data on the (a-)synchronicity between the fourth Kondratieff long-term economic cycle and the investment patterns in urban planning in Amsterdam en Antwerp, - to demonstrate through these instrumental cases how en why that these investment patterns can fundamentally influence a city's attractiveness to its inhabitants (in particular, to the creative class as defined by R. Florida).

At the request of the municipality of Mechlin, UFSIA places its scientifically services at the disposition of the city of Mechlin for the fulfilment of four tasks: - the inventory of databanks: UFSIA provides a summary of all existing, relevant dataressources, their accessibility and their usefulness for the city of Mechlin and the local actors. UFSIA also provides the necessary advice for local registration systems. - the accumulation of data, which is relevant for local, social planning: UFSIA sees to the statistical and qualitative data collection, the data control and the data centralization. - the succession of evolutions: UFSIA guarantees the assimilation and analysis of data. These analysis's are applied to formulate propositions concerning the municipal inclusive policy. - the activity rapport: UFSIA rapport the supplied activities annually and signal notes are formulated, these are the first steps towards formulating policy suggestions.

Scientific support of the 'Actionprogramme for combating functional illiteracy in Antwerp' 01/01/2000 - 31/12/2000

Abstract

Succeeding the completed research, this project is part of the action that takes place in the actionresearch on participation of low literate native adults in reading- and writingclasses of the Antwerp centre for basiceducation. It consists of the scientific support for and supervision of 4 actions that are executed in the centre: 1) the development of a regional netword of relavant actors and institutions for the centre; 2) the experimental development of renewed courses; 3/) the operationalisation of a new intake- and coachprocedure and 4) the development of ana integrated mediapolicy with specific intstruments. This evolves: the translation of researchfindings inot practical steppingstones for the actions, support of the staff that is involved in the execution of the actions through regularly held meetings, and the development and application of instruments to evaluate the outcome of the actions.
