Cato works as a Biological Material Movement Specialist
“Thanks to my degree, I know everything about biological material and the procedures involved - essential for a Biosafety Specialist.”
- Cato Koumans
- Bachelor in Biology (University of Antwerp, 2020)
- Master in Biology: Biodiversity, Conservation and Restoration (University of Antwerp, 2023)
- Works as Biological Material Movement Specialist EMEA at the BASF Innovation Centre in Ghent
Why did you choose to study Biology?
I’ve been an animal lover since childhood. This fascination with the animal world grew throughout my youth, so I quickly knew I wanted to deepen my knowledge in this field. When I spoke to someone about this program at a student fair, I was immediately convinced!
Where do you work now?
I work at the BASF Innovation Center in Ghent, in the Agricultural Solutions department. My role as Biological Material Movement Specialist EMEA involves providing support and advice when biological material needs to be shipped for Research & Development activities within or outside the EMEA region (Europe/Middle East/Africa).
In addition, I provide advice and training on biosafety for colleagues who work daily with genetically modified organisms and pathogens in lab and greenhouse environments. For both aspects of my job (Shipments and Biosafety), compliance is key. It’s crucial to maintain close contact with government authorities to obtain the necessary permits and certificates (contained use permits, import permits, phytosanitary certificates, plant passports, etc.).
This is my first job, I started right after graduating in 2023.
What knowledge from your biology degree do you use in your job?
In biosafety, it’s essential to have background knowledge of biological material and the procedures involved. How do DNA extractions work? How do you handle live bacterial cultures? This knowledge is critical for assessing risks and providing accurate advice.
Do you have a tip for people choosing their studies now?
Don’t overthink your future: grab opportunities with both hands, even if they’re outside your expectations. By trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone, you discover new sides of yourself. Every step forward starts with an attempt!
