At the University of Antwerp we ensure the quality of our programmes. Every programme goes through a quality assurance cycle of six years.
In year three we review the quality assurance of the programme during the internal process monitoring and control. In the autumn of 2019 this was done for the bachelor and master biology.
Year six concludes the cycle with a peer review. The study programme reflects on itself and has discussions with internal and external experts and with an independent student. In the spring of 2022 the peer review team will visit the programme.
The programme is characterized by the following strengths according to the visitation report of 2014, the follow-up plan after the visitation and based on the internal process monitoring and control. The programme is further strengthened by working on the following points.
The profile of the Bachelor’s degree in biology is very broad, with a focus on internship opportunities and work experience from the first year on. The integrated practicals are a first step towards a stronger interdisciplinary approach of biology. The fieldwork courses/laboratory work and the design of the bachelor’s thesis are strengths of the programme. The four specializations in the Master programme are all oriented towards the study of organisms and biological processes. The ambitions regarding internationalization are most clearly expressed in the two English specializations. The bachelor also clearly focuses on internationalization.
The programme has introduced consultations between lecturers to check whether new developments in biology or at the interface between biological disciplines are adequately addressed in the programme. The programme is asked to structurally embed sufficient, substantive feedback in order to effectively support student-centered learning.
The programme therefore organizes a Research Day where researchers, students and alumni meet. The focus on entrepreneurship within the study programme, through the option Management & Entrepreneurship, is a good example of how the student's view on the professional field can be broadened. An alumni club will also be established to promote contact between students, alumni and the programme. With these initiatives the programme wants to show students the possibilities in the work field after graduation.
