What does your job as an Expert in Chemical Substances Policy at the Federal Government involve?
As the name suggests, this is truly a policy-oriented role. I monitor European legislation on chemical substances, specifically the REACH restrictions (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of CHemicals). In addition, I coordinate Belgium’s position on this legislation. I prepare and implement federal policy on PFAS. Finally, I am also part of the Secretariat of the Scientific Committee REACH (WCSR).
Which knowledge from your studies do you use in your job?
On the one hand, concrete subject knowledge such as (eco)toxicology, environmental policy, and (organic) chemistry; on the other hand, general scientific skills like analyzing and interpreting scientific research.
How did you end up in this job?
During the course on ecotoxicology, I came into contact with REACH legislation. This sparked my interest in the vacancy. I applied after my studies and was able to start!
Why did you choose Biology at the University of Antwerp?
I was interested in biology and environmental sciences. The interesting curriculum and the availability of the Bio Hub on campus were a plus for Antwerp.
