Join us for a unique and inspiring day trip following the Arts and Media Archaeology Summer School on Saturday 11 July (open to all). Participants will enjoy a full day programme including:
- Entrance to the Jenevermuseum in Hasselt and Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren
- Guided tours by the curators
- Bus transportation
- A shared lunch
At the Jenevermuseum, curator Bart G. Moens will lead us through In de schaduw van de Fles. Een beeldstrijd van glasplaat tot film, exploring the media campaigns of temperance movements around the turn of the twentieth century, and their use of magic lanterns, posters, wax models, and film. The visit also includes a guided tour through the museum’s historic distillery by the museum director Davy Jacobs, with the opportunity to taste the traditional Belgian spirit jenever or a non-alcoholic option.
After lunch, we then travel to the Museum for Central Africa, where Leen Engelen will guide us throughThe Congo Panorama 1913. Colonial Illusion Exposed, offering a critical perspective on colonial visual culture and the panorama phenomenon. Together with artists and experts, the exhibition juxtaposes colonial imagery with historical and contemporary voices and insights that long remained silent.
Expect a day filled with fascinating media histories and a perfect opportunity to have conversations in an informal setting.
