JDS - 2018

32nd 'Joint Doctoral Seminar in History and Theory of Architecture'

Thursday 13 September 2018 - University of Antwerp

The architecture faculties and architectural engineering departments of Universiteit Antwerpen, KU Leuven, Université Catholique de Louvain, Université de Liège, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Universiteit Gent, Universiteit Hasselt and Vrije Universiteit Brussel are organizing the 32th edition of the Joint Doctoral Seminar (JDS) series in the History and Theory of Architecture on Thursday 13 September 2018.

The seminar will feature two types of presentations:

  • Plenary Lightning Talks (10’) presenting recently started PhD work or new research projects by junior or senior academics.
  • Workshop Presentations (10’) presenting a summary of an unpublished article or chapter of a PhD thesis in one of the three parallel workshops. This text will be circulated among the participants of the workshop beforehand. The participants in each workshop are asked to have read the papers. Both academics and junior researchers participating in the workshop will be invited to review and comment on the papers.

The two key note speakers, Graeme Brooker (Royal College of Art, London) and Tüüne-Kristine Vaikla (Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn)), will close the day with a double key lecture. Afterwards a reception will be offered.

  • Graeme Brooker (Royal College of Art, London) 'On Strategy'
The uniqueness of the subject of the interior, and its inherent capacity to use what is extant means that it requires unique strategies with which design and underpin its processes and thinking. This talk will explore strategy in order to make sense of what is found and how it might be re-engaged to make something new.

  • Tüüne-Kristin Vaikla (Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn) ‘Re-Purposing space: the role and potential of spatial intervention’
In interior architectural practice, the physical and the emotional approaches are in an inversely proportional relation to each other. Is it possible to direct people's behaviour through physical space and how space affects the human atmosphere? The talk focuses on the possible interaction between phenomenological knowledge and spatial investigation, design activism and the gentrification process evaluating spatial layers and human behavioural patterns.

17.30 Reception (K1.6 Campus Mutsaard)

Key note speakers

Tüüne-Kristin Vaikla is a spatial researcher and an interior architect who explores the social and artistic dimensions of space. She is an educator of transdisciplinary projects in Estonian Academy of Arts and has gained international experience as a guest lecturer and critic at RMIT University of Melbourne. Her PhD focused on questions resulting from the transformation of buildings and the metamorphosis of space that arises when new functions are accommodated. She has worked on a wide range of projects from interior architecture to art installations. She was curator of the Estonian National Exhibition at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale and the SISU symposiums in Tallinn and editor-in-chief of the SISU–LINE interior architecture research journal. Tüüne-Kristin is a practicing interior architect, and is a founder of and partner at Vaikla Studio. Since 2015 Tüüne-Kristin is elected to the board of European Council of Interior Architects ECIA.

Graeme Brooker is a practising interior designer and Head of Interior Design at the Royal College of Art. He has practised and studied Interior Design in both London and Manchester. He has extensive teaching and programme leadership experience. Between 1997 and 2004 Brooker taught Interior Architecture at Cardiff, before moving to Manchester where, between 2004 and 2010, he was programme leader of both the BA and MA Interior programmes as well as leader of the Centre for Design Research. In 2010 he was a principal lecturer in Interior Architecture at the University of Brighton, before becoming head of the Department of Fashion and Interiors at Middlesex University in 2013. Graeme has taught and lectured in various institutions in America, Europe and the Far East. Between 2010 and 2013 he was a visiting professor in Antwerp, and since 2014 is a visiting professor at Milan Polytechnic. In 2015 he co-developed the Creative Campus project in Rio, Brazil, with Philip Nutley and the UKTI, and was awarded a DAIWA scholarship for travel to Japan to study building reuse. For the academic year 2015/16 he is a recipient of a National Teaching Fellow award (NTFS). Brooker’s research interests are focused on the design of interior space and – in particular – the cultural, historical and philosophical implications of reusing existing buildings.
