Institute Born Bunge

The Institute Born Bunge (IBB) is a renowned centre of expertise in neuropathology affiliated with the University of Antwerp. For nearly a century, the IBB has been dedicated to improving our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and multiple sclerosis (MS). By combining diagnostics, scientific research, and biobanking, the institute actively contributes to advances in neuroscience.

With more than 6,500 carefully preserved brain tissue samples, the IBB manages one of the oldest and most extensive brain biobanks in Europe. This unique collection serves as an invaluable resource for research into the progression of neurological diseases and supports both fundamental and clinical research.

Thanks to its specialized laboratories and close collaboration with clinicians and researchers, the IBB operates at the intersection of neurology, neuropathology, and translational research. This enables the institute to provide faster and more accurate diagnoses, including for rare neurodegenerative disorders such as Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, and to refine treatments based on new scientific insights, sometimes even directly from the operating room to the laboratory and back to the patient.
