Reimagining Resilience to Hate: Storytelling as a Portal to Prevention?

25 April 2024 | Lecture by Dr. Amra Sabić-El Rayess

Amra Sabić-El Rayess

Amra Sabić-El Rayess was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina. There she experienced the siege of Bihać by the Bosnian Serb army and the accompanying genocidal violence during the years 1992-1995. After the Bosnian War, she studied at Brown University (Rhode Island) and became associate professor of practice at Columbia University's Teachers College.

Storytelling

In her research, teaching and community projects, she systematically explores opportunities to build a dam against ethnic and religious violence. Storytelling also occupies an important role in her engagement. She wrote two autobiographical books for young adults about her experiences as a Muslim girl in Bihać during the Bosnian War: The Cat I Never Named (2020) and Three Summers (2024).
