Alumnus Hebert Reyes

"Working in the energy industry is a pillar for the world."

Hebert Reyes is originally from Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico and studied the Master of Business Economics at the University of Antwerp. The university’s international atmosphere helped him adapt quicky.

What is your most fond memory of UAntwerp?

Something that always impressed me was the campus architecture, and I clearly remember the cafeteria was delicious. I have many anecdotes, but I can confirm that I'm still in touch with a lot of friends I made there.

What did your career path look like after graduation?

Upon returning from my studies in Europe, I began teaching business administration at a local university, but later I began my professional career in international project management.

Between 2011 and 2018, I worked on railway and energy projects at Bombardier and Mitsubishi Power Systems, managing everything from production and client relations to contract billing and warranty follow-ups. I gained experience in handling technical and financial aspects, overseeing project changes, and ensuring quality standards. These roles strengthened my ability to lead cross-functional teams.

What is it like to work in Mexico?

Working at a corporate office in Mexico City has been great. My studies in international business have been invaluable, as most of the company is bilingual and we frequently collaborate with teams in Japan and the United States, creating a truly international work environment. I work at Avenida Reforma, the corporate hub of the city, which gives you the feeling of being in the right place to grow professionally.  I believe studying abroad fosters a high level of adaptability and flexibility, essential qualities in today’s constantly changing world.

What tips would you give to current student?

Working in the energy industry is a pillar for the world. Knowing that your efforts contribute to sustainable development is deeply rewarding. My recommendations for anyone interested in this field are:

  • Learn English, and if possible, another language. It's essential in today’s globalized world.
  • Study abroad to challenge yourself and gain confidence outside your comfort zone.
  • Keep investing in your education to be ready when opportunities arise.
  • Always have a plan to stay focused on your goals.
  • Don’t be afraid to make decisions or take responsibility; sometimes not acting can cost you more.
